- Brown Vs. The Board of Education
Summary: In the time of 1950’s there was still racial discrimination going on in the states between blacks and whites. Even schools partook in the act of separating the colored from the whites. Linda brown, an African American third grader from Topeka, Kansas witnessed this first hand. She had a long road ahead of her everyday to get to school she walked a mile to the bus stop to get the school bus to get there. The shocking part was that she was walking a mile everyday when a white school was available seven blocks away. Oliver Brown, the father of Linda Brown, applied to many white schools that were closer to their house but he was denied by them because of their skin color.
After filing so many court state cases to defend his daughter, Oliver Brown and the NAACP took their case to the United States Supreme Court to have a plead hearing on October 1, 1951. At the time, there were many court cases out there that had the same issue. In 1952, the Supreme court heard the African American's case and debated on what they wanted to do with the issue. Two years later, the case ends in favor of Linda Brown and other African Americans that live close to white schools.
During the time of World War II there were many black soldiers commissioned as officers but were denied the right to be them because whites were chosen over them. This means that the black soldiers remained as they were as truck drivers and to be there to supply weapons. This group was called the “Red Ball Express” which supplied Soldiers with weapons while fighting in World War II. While battling France the Red Bull Express helped General George S. Patton and his Troops. The US lost many soldiers in the war and most were white, so the black’s got their chance at integrating the Military and fought in the replacement of those soldiers. Even though the colored soldiers got to fight there were still white officers and generals that disagreed with them being troops. In 1948 shortly after World War II, President Harry S. Truman Executively Ordered that the military was to integrate all military units. This became a big advancement in civil rights at the time.
